Last night, Oppa & I ventured into a place we've never been before.. the Argentinian Social Club.
I was a bit nervous about attending this thing.
1. I don't speak Spanish
2. It's room full of strangers
3. Have to be in the mood to socialise
When we first walked in, a lot of them were looking at us, probably thinking to themselves "what are those 2 Chinos doing here, are they lost?". I spotted a couple of Asian faces so I didn't feel too out of it hehe It was quite a casual occasion and people just sat around, boozed and mingled. There were a lot of kids.. reminded me of the Brazilian social club I went to a few years back. That was fun too, a lot of dancing - hip shaking exercise hehe
There were a lot of different Spanish speaking countries in the room - Peru, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela and of course Spain (the minority though). There were plenty of booze, food (BBQ lamb chop and some typical Argentinian salad called Russian Salad haha) and a lot of latino music!!!
There were some Tango performance during dinner and Oppa pointed out that Clive's parents were one of the performers! What a small world! So we ended up being taught how to do simple Tango.. Oppa & I tried.. not great but I think we did ok haha I think it's soo great to have something in common with the husband or with the wife. Do something together as a couple and enjoy each other's presence in a different environment other than home =)
We met a lot of Aussie who were learning or are interested to learn Spanish. It was fun chatting to them and a lot of them are quite advanced in terms of Spanish speaking! Oppa was not fazed by it all.. I think he enjoyed learning from them and trying to chuck out a few Spanish words haha We also met 1 Spaniard and he was soo funny. Very good English and he's a great teacher too! But he and this other Aussie kept on teaching Oppa pick-up lines and ahem terms.. tsk tsk! It was funny to watch, and some of the phrases Oppa didn't even understand why it's a pick-up line. *sigh* I guess it's a good thing haha
Unfortunately the Spaniard only here for 1 year and he's about to leave in July! It was quite amusing because this Spaniard doesn't fit the stereotype of a Spanish person. He doesn't like bull-fighting, he says there are no siestas and he doesn't dance hahaha He was still a lovely bloke nonetheless, and he was using a few Aussie words like "reckon" hehe So farnie to hear it spoken in a foreign tongue =)
I really enjoyed my night. A memorable night. I also got to shake my hips! A guy at our table took me onto the dance floor and strutted his moves. Not great but he had a few cool moves he learnt when he was travelling through the South American cities. Most of the people there have been to South America - could see a glint of jealousy in Oppa's eyes =P
Towards the end of the night, 2 teenagers approached us and started chit chatting. Both were from Chile and one I think is only about 13-15, he's only been in Perth for like 5 months. He was like telling me about Hamasaki and Boa and how he loves them and he listens all the time. It was like weeeirrd! haha They also started talking about how the latinos when they get drunk, their eyes start to be like oriental eyes and so they call each other Chinos (terms of endearment apparently). I don't know how true that is though!
Aight, better get back to studying. I did 3 pages of notes yesterday before I went out, BUT I saved over it with a blank document! WTF WTF!! I realised after I got home and I was totally spewing. So I woke up at 8am and quickly re-did it. Faster the 2nd time round.... but still d'oh!
